In mid-October, we met up with our friends Dietmar, Alice and Lora in Alsace. What an amazing weekend! Although we were not far from Freiburg (about 150 km), it was a different world across the border. We stayed in a vacation home in the Vosges mountains and we explored the region around this part of Alsace. We climbed up the mountain near Ribeauvillé to see the ruins of three medieval castles. (It was so exciting that even the younger members of our group (Kai and Lora) managed the whole hike without complaining!) The next day, we visited the castle at Haut-Koenigsbourg. This is also a medieval castle but it has been restored. We wrapped up the weekend with a hike around Lac Blanc and up the Petit Ballon to watch the sunset. Andreas and I have both ranked this as the top trip of our year!
