The Big Belly Laugh

Kai has a whole host of new tricks these days– the most endearing of which is the big belly laugh (see videos). He seems to find Andreas hilariously funny and cracks up every time Andreas talks to him. He is also grabbing everything in sight. Special favourites are of course Mom’s glasses and Papi’s nose. He actually fell asleep the other night grasping Andreas’ nose. Sitting up by himself is just around the corner and crawling shouldn’t be far behind. We are expecting that we will be very busy chasing our little wiggler!

Kai loves going out in the Mountain Buggy (our stroller) and we are out at least once a day. We finished our baby lap time class at the library this week. It was moderately successful — the best part was the look on Kai’s face when he saw the other babies. He really loves being around other people. Strange how two introverts have produced this extroverted kid.

To replace our library session, we have now started to go to a new moms’ group put on by the public health unit. Kai slept for the first half of the first session and then awoke to find himself in a room full of twenty babies. Smiles all around! They are quite a few little ones in the room and I remembered with no nostalgia the pain of those first sleepless nights and the confusion of the adjustment to parenthood. It seems like so long ago. Now we are in the groove and Kai is just so much fun to be around that we could never go back.

As it turns out, Roots of Empathy decided that they did need to use us as a family so now I am volunteering both as an instructor and as an ROE family. I took Kai into a Grade One class this week for his introduction and the kids were wild about him. He performed wonderfully and wiggled and talked and grabbed hair. He was a hit. This week I will have my first class (no Kai – Papi is going to be in charge of childcare for every Wednesday morning) with a Kindergarten/Grade One split class in an economically depressed area of Edmonton. It should be a very interesting experience and I will undoubtedly be writing lots about it.

OK, I’ll end here with two photos for the grandparents — I know that I’m going to be getting requests for copies of these ones!
